A Parenting Skills
Primer
Parenting is a hard job and there is no
handbook to help parents do it. Children are all
different. They can often present challenges that require
parenting skills to help overcome.
Every parent should know the basic parenting skills.
They should have a good understanding of them and how to
implement them. This will help when parenting becomes a
little tough.
Skills that are Must Have's
Some parenting skills we are born with and others are
learned. Sometimes a parent may not even have a skill
until they are forced into it through parenting.
No matter what type of skill base you have, one thing is
certain. Once you become a parent you will learn a
wide range of skills that will help you raise your child.
Here are some parenting skills you may already have before
becoming a parent:
- Patience. Perhaps the greatest parenting skill of
all. Patience is essential to parenting. You have to
teach your children everything they will ever need to know in
life, form how to walk to how to treat other people. This
requires great patience as they go through the trial and error
process of learning.
- Anger Management. Just as patience is important in
raising a child, so is knowing hw to mange your anger.
Children can be frustrating. They like to test the
boundaries and they tend to make parents angry in the
process. You have to know how t control your anger and
discipline with love.
- Communication. As your child's number one teacher
you have to teach them to talk and communicate.
Communication skills are an essential part of life so you have
to set a good role model. You also have to understand how
to communicate with your child at each stage of their
development so you can parent them the best way possible.
- Humor. Above all else parenting requires
humor. Sometimes kids can create the most funny
situations. Every parent has experienced a moment when
they know they should be punishing their child but it is just
too funny not to laugh. Humor is something important that
you can pass on to your children.
Here are some skills you may need to learn once you become a
parent:
- Health Care. Yes, as apparent you play the part of
doctor. You have to know when to call the actual doctor
and when you can handle something on your own. You also
have to know how to handle minor problems with first aid and
general health care basics.
- Teaching. As mentioned you are your child's life
teacher. You have to know how to teach them to do almost
everything.
- Management. You are a manager when you are a
parent. You have to know how to manage time, money and
life in general. Without good management skills you are
sure to have chaos, especially if you have more then one
child.
