Getting the Most from a Food Recipe

Many people rely on food recipes to help them cook.  A recipe is a good way to learn new techniques and make challenging food items.  Additionally, they are perfect for someone who loves to cook, but who can not remember recipes without writing them down.

Reading a Recipe

There are different parts to a recipe and it is important to understand each part.

- Ingredients:  The beginning of a food recipe is going to tell the ingredients and amount of each ingredient needed to create the dish.  Sometimes the ingredients are listed in the order in which they are added to the dish, but sometimes they are in no particular order.
- Measurements:  The measurements for ingredients can range from teaspoons to cups to fluid ounces to pounds to whole containers. It is important to understand these terms and the common abbreviations.
- Step by step: The next part of the receipt is going to tell you what to do.  This is usually listed step by step.  If the dish is to be baked in the oven the oven temperature and preheating instructions are usually given first.  Sometimes, though they are at the end of the recipe.  They  will tell you when to add each ingredient and give directions on mixing and other techniques involved in making the dish.

Using the Recipe

You are ready to create the dish once you have read through the recipe and assembled the ingredients.  You may wish to know some helpful pointers that can make your cooking easier.

Before starting to use any recipe it is important to read it over and gather all ingredients listed.  You should always note the cooking temperature for baking in an oven and whether the oven needs preheated or not before starting a recipe.

Always check if pans are to be greased or not.  Avoid substituting things without first checking to see if a substitute can be made.

Always measure carefully and as instructed in the recipe, if specific instructions are given.  It is important to follow the instructions closely, especially if you have never made the dish before.

Always check for things like chilling, overnight resting and other time consuming methods.  Generally, if there are special techniques involved in the recipe that are not common knowledge a tutorial will be given in the instructions or a side note to explain how to do the technique.  Always make sure to read through this, too.

Before measurements were mentioned.  Here is a quick list of abbreviations you should know:
Tsp or t = teaspoon
Tbls or T = tablespoon
C = cup
Fl oz = fluid ounce
Lb or Lbs = pound or pounds
